Essential Question for New Unit

Read document with four quotes, and think back to what you saw and heard today.  Do two things in this blog: 1) what is the problem that is common to the four quotes? 2) How would you state the question that we might be trying to understand/solve based on these four quotes?

1) The problem that is in common in all four of the quotes is that all the quotes are about risking ones life to live a life of ultimate justice, and that truly believing in what one stands for requires the ability to risk ones life. They are all facing the problem of freedom and challenging the ability/capability of free will.
2) I would state the question that we are trying to answer as what is free will, and how do we subconsciously conform and train ourselves to live against what we might truly want?

1.) Each of these quotes states that one shall die for what they believe in. The flaw in this is that it's not always good to die for what you believe in. Some people may think that it is necessary to stand up for what you believe in, but to die for it is completely un-necessary. It doesn't matter what that one person thinks, because they must think of their loved ones, and how much the situation / predicament can affect them as a whole. Life could be miserable for those loved ones after the one specific person dies for what they believe in. So, in this scenario; Dying for what one believes in is not necessary at all.

2.) My question would be: "To what extent would you allow punishment upon yourself, only to have the satisfaction that you are respecting what you truly believe in?"

1) The problem with these 4 quotes is that no regular person in our society today is willing to sacrifice their lives for something they believe in. People stand for their beliefs right until the point where the going gets to tough for them to handle.

2) My question is at what point do we as human beings give up on what we believe in?

1) The problem is that these people are risking their lives to fight for what they believe in or in other words they are trying to stay true to themselves.

2) The question I would ask is why is it necessary to go to extreme measures to fight for what one believes in and is there a better solution?

1) what is the problem that is common to the four quotes?

Humans are constantly pushed into becoming something that they aren't,into the laws and values of society. Because we strive for freedom, we will risk becoming martyrs to our beliefs no matter what the cost.

2) How would you state the question that we might be trying to understand/solve based on these four quotes?

If one has their own mind, body & soul, why are we not capable of believing so and what will it take to gain the strength to know what it means to achieve freedom?

The problem that is brought up in each of the quotes is the pressure from society that is placed on people to conform to the rest of the worlds views. All of the authors of the quotes stay true to themselves and what they believe instead of falling in line with society. Most people live a lie instead of following what they truly believe because its easier.
My Question: Is what you believe worth fighting for or is it simpler to hide it and fit in?

1.) The problem that is common in the quotes is that most people conform to society's beliefs despite their convictions. All of these quotes talk about putting your life on the line during times of adversity.

2.) Are your convictions strong enough to face death when your freedoms are being taken from you?
